Coffees & Cocoa

Coffee of the Day

Our flavored coffee of the day, which will vary from day-to-day, will be introduced by your Server, is freshly brewed throughout the day, as well as our regular and decaffeinated blends.

History of Coffee

In the Ethiopian highlands, where the legend of Kaldi, the goatherd, originated, coffee trees grow today as they have for centuries. Though we will never know with certainty, there probably is some truth to the Kaldi legend.

It is said that he discovered coffee after noticing that his goats, upon eating berries from a certain tree, became so spirited that they did not want to sleep at night.

Kaldi dutifully reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery who made a drink with the berries and discovered that it kept him alert for the long hours of evening prayer. Soon the abbot had shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and ever so slowly knowledge of the energizing effects of the berries began to spread. As word moved east and coffee reached the Arabian peninsula, it began a journey which would spread its reputation across the globe.

Today coffee is grown in a multitude of countries around the world. Whether it is Asia or Africa, Central or South America, the islands of the Caribbean or Pacific, all can trace their heritage to the trees in the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau.

Hot Chocolate W/Homemade Whipped Cream Topping

Our Hot Chocolate is made from the finest cocoa powder, and the freshest milk stirred to perfection. Aromatic and soothing, a creamy delight for your taste buds.

History of Hot Chocolate

Back in the days of the Aztecs, cocoa beans were valuable not only for their culinary importance but also as currency. Cocoa beans were often given as gifts during important ceremonies and festivals. Even so, they also used the roasted beans to make a chocolate drink. Their version is much different from the hot chocolate we know today. The Aztecs actually drank it cold, flavored with wine and chili peppers, and not at all sweet.
Chocolate was discovered and brought to Europe in the early 1500s by the explorer Cortez. After its introduction in Spain, the drink began to be served hot, sweetened and without the chili peppers. The Spanish were very protective of their wonderful new beverage, and it was over a hundred years before news of it began to spread across Europe.

When it hit London (in the 1700s), chocolate houses became popular and very trendy. It was the English who started adding milk to their chocolate and it was enjoyed as an after-dinner beverage.

It wasn't until the middle of the eighteenth century that chocolate began to evolve past its drinkable form. First, cocoa powder was invented in Holland. Cocoa powder blends much easier with milk or water, allowing for more creations to come. Then came chocolate as a candy by mixing cocoa butter with sugar. In 1876, milk chocolate was developed. From then on, chocolate has become more popular as a solid treat rather than as the drink it started from.

Our Cinnamon Tea blend is a sweet and spicy blend of cinnamon pieces, rose petals and natural flavors. The base of this wonderfully smooth tea is a Sencha style green tea manufactured in Hunan Province, South Eastern China. Sencha, a Japanese style green tea, is produced by skipping the fermentation process required for black tea. The freshly plucked leaves are steamed or heated immediately and then bruised by machine or hand. Next the leaf is pan-fried or sometimes basket fired - processes that give the tea its distinctive glossy look and feel. The finished tea has a dark green, needle shaped leaf and produces a pale green, yellowish liquor with a very bright cup and sweet, honey like finish. If the sky threatens rain or the temperature begins to dip, brew a steaming pot and let the hot spicy cinnamon notes transport you to the warm beaches of Sibu.

Lemon Tea

Our Lemon Tea blend is a pleasant blend of tart lemon, with the sweetness of healthy green tea. Pekoe is one of the stronger flavored green teas on the market and takes your taste buds on a journey of smoky depths with each sip. Its strength and flavor comes from the way it is rolled during production. The labor-intensive process includes hand rolling each individual leaf in order to force flavorful liquids from the center of the leaf to the surface. Firing seals the leaf in this rolled state and keeps the flavor and power contained. Add to this, the lively character of fresh lemons. Although lemons are generally known for their soothing qualities, they also pack some power.

Milk & Chocolate Milk

Milk

There is nothing like a fresh glass of wholesome Milk ... and old time favorite!

History of Milk

In 1856, Gail Borden received the first United States and English patents for condensed milk. Gail Borden patented a method for making condensed milk by heating it in a partial vacuum. In 1861, Gail Borden opened a condensed milk plant and cannery in Wassaic, New York.

In 1863, Louis Pasteur invented pasteurization, a method of killing harmful bacteria in beverage and food products. In 1891, the first U.S. milk processing plant to install pasteurization equipment was the Sheffield Farms Dairy in Bloomfield, New Jersey. They used a German-made pasteurizer. In 1908, Chicago became the first major American city to pass a law requiring commercial milk to be pasteurized milk.

Chocolate Milk

If you have a sweet tooth, which most of us do, there's nothing like a fresh glass of wholesome Milk, flavored with our finest cocoa, naturally sweetened ... a childhood favorite!

History of Chocolate Milk

An Irish physician named Sir Hans Sloane is the inventor of chocolate milk. He came up with it while he was traveling through Jamaica. He went to Jamaica in 1687 to become the physician for the Duke of Albemarle. The only problem was that the Duke died soon after landing, and his visit lasted only 15 months. During that time, however, he noted about 800 new species of plant, and the most important thing of all, he encountered cocoa. Locals in Jamaica drank cocoa with water, something that Sloane found nauseating. He saw promise in the drink, however, and decided to find ways to make it more acceptable. He struck gold when he managed to mix it with milk. He brought back his chocolate milk recipe with him back to England, where it was manufactured and sold by apothecaries as medicine. The rest is history ... delicious, chocolaty history.

Coca-Cola (regular & diet)

History of Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola history began in 1886 when the curiosity of an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, led him to create a distinctive tasting soft drink that could be sold at soda fountains. He created a flavored syrup, took it to his neighborhood pharmacy, where it was mixed with carbonated water and deemed by those who sampled it. Dr. Pemberton's partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, is credited with naming the beverage CocaCola as well as designing the trademarked, distinct script, still used today.

Pepsi Cola (regular & diet)

History of Pepsi Cola

Caleb Bradham of New Bern, North Carolina was a pharmacist. Like many pharmacists at the turn of the century he had a soda fountain in his drugstore, where he served his customers refreshing drinks, that he created himself. His most popular beverage was something he called "Brad's drink" made of carbonated water, sugar, vanilla, rare oils, pepsin and cola nuts.

"Brad's drink", created in the summer of 1893, was later renamed Pepsi Cola in 1898 after the pepsin and cola nuts used in the recipe. In 1898, Caleb Bradham wisely bought the trade name "Pep Cola" for $100 from a competitor from Newark, New Jersey that had gone broke. The new name was trademarked on June 16th, 1903.

Rootbeer

History of Root Beer

That carbonated, creamy, soft and foamy drink we love known as Root Beer has a long history. In 1265, the British Isles enjoyed a Dandelion and Burdock beverage; it was a naturally fizzy soft drink and is still made there today. During medieval time, sanitation was so bad there was very little clean water to drink, so the people who drank from wells, rivers or streams became sick. It was healthier to drink wine, spirits, tea, and small beer. It is told in Belgium that St Arnold, a monk and a scientist studied why rich people were healthier than the poor. His answer was in what the people drank, water or a brewed drink. It was important to have a low alcohol drink for women and children, so small beer was made. Some historical documents say Shakespeare was known to drink 'small beers.' One recipe for small beer was from early colonial America, containing 2-12-percent alcohol, berries, herbs and bark. This was considered a refreshing social drink.
